                  PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES DAVID B. HERMELIN 
                        AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO NORWAY

The President today announced his intent to nominate David B. Hermelin to be the United States Ambassador to Norway.

Mr. Hermelin, of Southfield, Michigan, began his career in 1958, when he joined his father in the general insurance agency that became Hermelin, Colburn, Colburn, Blumberg & Steinberg. During the next 22 years, Hermelin also became a partner in numerous other enterprises. In 1980, he left the insurance agency and assumed the role of strategic partner and director in numerous business ventures including, Arbor Drugs, Inc.; First of America Bank Corporation; Phoenicia America-Israel Flat Glass, Ltd.; and Village Green Apartments. Currently, he is Chairman of the Board of Active Aero, Inc., USA Jet.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Hermelin received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1958. In 1996, he was awarded an honorary Juris Doctor degree from the Detroit College of Law.
