PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES CHRISTOPHER ASHBY AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE ORIENTAL REPUBLIC OF URUGUAY
President Clinton today announced his intent to nominate Christopher Ashby to be United States Ambassador to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
Mr. Ashby, of Westport, Connecticut, has been in international banking with Chemical Bank and Chase Manhattan Bank for the past 24 years. He began in l973 in the Southeast Asian area and was posted to Jakarta, Indonesia in l975. In l977, he became President/ Director of a joint venture merchant bank in Jakarta. In l979, Ashby was transferred to Madrid, Spain to begin the Chemical operation there, and in l981, became Country Manager of Spain and Portugal. In l989, he returned to the United States to manage the bank's relationship with the United Nations. In l996, he moved to the newly created International Consumer area of the bank.
Mr. Ashby was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1968, and received an MBA from the University of Texas Graduate School of Business Administration in 1970. He spent four years in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer, and served in Vietnam as a platoon commander.
