                 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JAMES C. HORMEL 
                     AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO LUXEMBOURG

The President today announced his intent to nominate James C. Hormel to be United States Ambassador to Luxembourg.

Mr. Hormel, of San Francisco, California, is Chairman of Equidex, Inc. He recently completed his term as Alternate Representative of the U.S. Delegation to the 51st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. He also was a member of the U.S. Delegation to the 51st United Nations Human Rights Commission, which met in Geneva, Switzerland in 1995. In 1995, and again in 1997, he served on the Western States Regional Selection Panel for the President's Commission on White House Fellowships. In 1995, he participated in the President's Conference on the Pacific Rim, and the following year he was a member of Mayor Willie Brown's Economic Summit in San Francisco.

He currently serves on a variety of civic and non-profit boards, including the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Hormel received a B.A. in History from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1955, where he is currently a member of the Board of Managers. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1958, where he subsequently served as Assistant Dean and Dean of Students and later as Chairman of the Law School Visiting Committee.
