                 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JOAN DEMPSEY 
              AS DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT 
                  AT THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY

President Clinton today announced his intent to nominate Ms. Joan Dempsey as Deputy Director for Community Management at the Central Intelligence Agency.

Ms. Dempsey, of Virginia, is the Chief of Staff to the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Prior to joining the CIA, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security and Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence. Previously, she was the Director of the National Military Intelligence Production Center, Director of the Military Intelligence Staff, and Deputy Director of the General Defense Intelligence Program Staff. Ms. Dempsey is a naval reserve officer and served on active duty in the Far East. She received her B.A. in political science from Southern Arkansas University and an M.A. in public administration from the University of Arkansas.

In her new role, Ms. Dempsey will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective collection of national intelligence using technical means and human sources, conducting oversight of the analysis and production of intelligence by elements of the intelligence community and performing community-wide management functions of the intelligence community, including the management of personnel and resources. The Deputy Director of Central Intelligence for Community Management takes precedence in the Office of the Director of Central Intelligence immediately after the Deputy Director of Central Intelligence.
