               PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ALPHONSO MALDON, JR. 
                       AS DEPUTY SECRETARY AT THE 
                     DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS' AFFAIRS 

President Clinton today announced the nomination of Alphonso Maldon, Jr. as Deputy Secretary at the Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Mr. Maldon, of Virginia, is currently a Deputy Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs, where he has served since 1994. Previously, he was Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of the Military Affairs Office. He received a B.S. in Business Administration from Florida A&M University and an M.A. in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma.

Mr. Maldon is a retired officer with a strong background in military and veterans' issues. His leadership, administrative and management skills will be assets to the successful management of the Department of Veterans' Affairs' comprehensive and diverse programs for veterans and their dependents.

As the Deputy Secretary, Mr. Maldon will be responsible for assisting the Secretary in maintaining a nationwide system of health-care services, benefits programs and national cemeteries for more than 26 million American veterans.
