STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Meeting with His All Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch

President Clinton will meet with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Christian Church, at the White House on October 22, 1997.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for the President and the Patriarch to discuss areas of mutual interest, including human rights, religious freedom and protection of the environment.

The Patriarch will visit several U.S. cities after his meeting with the President. More than five million Americans are members of the Orthodox Christian Church.
