                PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES STANLEY T. ESCUDERO 
         AS UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO THE REPUBLIC OF AZERBAIJAN

President Clinton today announced his intent to nominate Stanley T. Escudero, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Ambassador Stanley T. Escudero, of Florida, is currently serving as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Uzbekistan. Ambassador Escudero has over thirty years of foreign service including extensive experience in Central Asia, Iran, South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa as well as in Washington. From 1992 to 1995, he served as the Ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan. He also served as the Special Envoy for Humanitarian Assistance to Tajikistan from 1992 to 1993. Ambassador Escudero received his B.A. from the University of Florida in 1965.

Ambassador Escudero has been married for the past 30 years to the former M. Jaye Cobb. They have two sons: Alexander, age 23 and Benjamin, age 19. Ambassador Escudero speaks French and Farsi (Persian).
