THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release September 3, 1997

STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

I am pleased that the Senate approved today a tough amendment that helps protect our children from the life-threatening effects of tobacco. President Clinton and I feel strongly that the FDA should be given the full $34 million to ensure that it can crack down on illegal sales of tobacco products to children and adolescents. This amendment will help ensure that the FDA has the resources it needs to work with states and retailers to keep tobacco out of the reach of our children.

Today's vote will help save lives. It is an important victory for our children and a clear endorsement of the national effort to protect them from the dangers of tobacco.

I commend Senator Harkin and Senator Chaffee for their strong commitment to this issue and for working with me over the recess to get this important amendment passed.
