              PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ALEXANDER R. VERSHBOW AS 
            U.S. PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE ON THE COUNCIL OF THE 
                   NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION 

The President today announced his intent to nominate Alexander R. Vershbow, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor, to be U.S. Permanent Representative on the Council of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, with rank and status of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

Mr. Vershbow, of Washington, D.C., has been Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for European Affairs on the staff of the National Security Council since l994. He previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, Deputy U.S. Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and Director of the State Department's Office of Soviet Union Affairs. He has also served at the American Embassies in Moscow and London and as an Advisor to the U.S. Delegation to the SALT and START negotiations. Mr. Vershbow has degrees from Yale College and Columbia University.
