            PRESIDENT NAMES EVA M. PLAZA AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY 
                   FOR FAIR HOUSING AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, 
              U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT

The President today announced his intention to nominate Eva M. Plaza as Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Ms. Plaza of Kensington, Maryland, has served as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Civil Division Torts Branch, at the U.S. Department of Justice since August 1993. As Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Ms. Plaza administers the Torts Branch of the Department of Justice, and manages and supervises a legal staff specializing in all areas of tort law. From 1989 to 1993, Ms. Plaza worked in the District of Columbia law firm of Seyfarth, Shaw, Fairweather, and Geraldson. She represented major domestic and international corporations in commercial and government contracts litigation before U.S. Districts Courts, the International Chamber of Commerce Court, and various administrative courts and boards of contract appeals. From 1986 to 1989, Ms. Plaza handled civil and criminal federal litigation matters, including bankruptcy, environment, housing, government contracts, commercial and securities for Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin, and Kahn in the District of Columbia. Ms. Plaza also served as trial counsel in the Attorney General's honors program at the U.S. Department of Justice from 1984 to 1986. She holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where she served on the California Law Review.

The Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, advises the Secretary on policies and issues affecting fair housing and equal opportunity programs. The Assistant Secretary is responsible for monitoring and enforcing the Fair Housing Act, Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975.
