STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

National Security Advisor's Trip to China

Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, Samuel R. Berger, will visit the People's Republic of China August 10-13 for consultations with Chinese officials. He will be accompanied by Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Stanley O. Roth, National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs Sandra J. Kristoff, and several other officials.

Mr. Berger's trip to China is a continuation of the high-level strategic dialogue begun last year, the purpose of which is to expand areas of cooperation and work through problems on a range of bilateral, regional and international issues. Mr. Berger also expects to discuss preparations for the state visit of Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Washington this autumn. In addition to consultations in Beijing, Mr. Berger's party will travel to the city of Beidaihe, in Hebei Province, where they will meet with President Jiang and other senior Chinese leaders.
