STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President's Meeting with President Grimsson of Iceland

President Clinton was pleased to welcome Icelandic President Olafur Grimsson to the White House today. This was the first meeting of the two Presidents. They discussed plans for a joint commemoration in the year 2000 of the one-thousandth anniversary of the first crossing by Europeans to North America: Leif Erikson's voyage in the year 1000. President Clinton also thanked President Grimsson for his efforts on behalf of global environmental issues, for his strong support of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and for NATO enlargement.
