THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release June 25, 1997

STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend, Jacques Cousteau. The world has lost a great explorer, a committed environmentalist, and a passionate teacher.

The Earth's oceans never had a formal ambassador. They had something better -- Jacques Cousteau.

When he climbed aboard Calypso, Jacques Cousteau took the rest of us along. He dedicated his life to teaching the world about the wonders -- both exotic and ordinary -- of the deep-sea abyss. Through his lyrical writings and breathtaking films, he brought the undersea world to an audience as expansive as the oceans themselves.

I am consoled that his work to protect the marine environment will live on -- through the Cousteau Foundation, and through the millions around the world who have been inspired to action by his work.

Tipper and I will miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his many friends.
