STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

VICE PRESIDENT MEETS UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT IN NEW YORK

NEW YORK-- Vice President Al Gore today met with Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma while in New York for the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Environment and Development. The Vice President and the President discussed several issues including the climate for US investment in Ukraine, cooperation on combating crime and corruption in Ukraine, and non-proliferation issues.

The Vice President and President jointly chair the US-Ukraine Binational Commission (Gore-Kuchma Commission). The Commission provides a framework for bilateral activities on: foreign policy, security, trade and investment, and sustainable economic cooperation. The Commission held its inaugural meeting in May, when President Kuchma visited Washington.
