               PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES NANCY J. POWELL AS 
               U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA

The President today announced his nomination of Nancy J. Powell as a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counselor, to be Ambassador to the Republic of Uganda.

Ms. Powell of Iowa, joined the Foreign Service in 1977 following six and a half years as a high school social studies teacher in the Dayton Community Schools, Dayton, Iowa. Ms. Powell has served in Ottawa, Kathmandu, Islamabad, Lome, Calcutta, and New Delhi as well as in Washington as the Nepal desk officer and refugee affairs officer before assuming her current position as Deputy Chief of Mission in Dhaka in August, 1995.

She is a 1970 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. She speaks French, Nepali, and Urdu.
