PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES STANLEY OWEN ROTH AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY

        FOR EAST ASIAN AND PACIFIC AFFAIRS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF 
                                 STATE

     President Clinton today announced the nomination of Stanley Owen

Roth as Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State.

Mr. Roth, of Alexandria, Virginia, is currently Director of Research and Studies at the U.S. Institute of Peace, a think tank in Washington, D.C. His previous experience includes service as Staff Director of the Subcommittee on Asian-Pacific Affairs of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asian at the National Security Council. Mr. Roth earned a B.A. degree in Political Science from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1975, and a M.A. degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in 1977.

In his capacity as Assistant Secretary for East Asian Pacific Affairs, Mr. Roth will formulate, direct and implement U.S. foreign policy for the East Asian and Pacific Region and serve as the principal advisor to the Secretary of State on all current and long-range policy matters affecting the region.
