PRESIDENT NAMES CATHERINE WOTEKI UNDER SECRETARY FOR FOOD SAFETY

AT THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

The President today announced his intent to nominate Dr. Catherine Woteki for Under Secretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Dr. Woteki, of Washington, DC, is currently the Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In this capacity, Dr. Woteki has been responsible for the management of four agencies: the Agricultural Research Service; the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, the Economic Research Service, and the National Agricultural Statistics Service. She leads the Administration,s implementation of the 1996 Farm Bill,s provisions on research and education. From 1994 to 1995, Dr. Woteki served as the Deputy to the Associate Director for Science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Dr. Woteki was the Deputy Director of the Division of Health and Examination Statistics, National Center for Health Statistics, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1983 to 1990. From 1980 to 1983, Dr. Woteki was the Acting Associate Administrator of the Human Nutrition Information Service and served as leader of the Food and Diet Appraisal Research Group in the Consumer Nutrition Information Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Dr. Woteki received a B.S. from Mary Washington College, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

The Under Secretary for Food Safety oversees the Food Safety and Inspection Service, which is the public health agency responsible for ensuring that meat and poultry products are safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled.
