STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Visit of NATO Secretary General Javier Solana

President Clinton has invited NATO Secretary General Javier Solana to meet with him at the White House on May 19. Secretary General Solana has accepted. The meeting offers an opportunity for the President to congratulate the Secretary General for successfully negotiating the NATO-Russia Founding Act, which will be signed at a NATO-Russia Summit later this month. They will also discuss preparations for the historic July 8-9 NATO Summit in Madrid, at which time NATO will invite the first group of new members to begin accession talks.
