Ambassador Richardson Mission to Zaire

President Clinton has asked Ambassador Bill Richardson, United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, to lead a special mission to Zaire.

Ambassador Richardson plans to meet with senior leaders of the Zairian Government and the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire (ADFL) to urge them to find a peaceful resolution to the current conflict. He will press both sides to agree to halt the fighting and launch serious negotiations to form an inclusive transitional government leading to free and fair democratic elections.

During the mission, Ambassador Richardson will also underscore the deep concern of the United States regarding the humanitarian situation, refugee repatriation and human rights in Zaire.
