THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release March 16, 1997

Statement by the Press Secretary

In light of the President's knee injury and recent surgery, the President has asked, and the Danish government has agreed, to postpone his planned visit to Denmark until July. The President's visit to Denmark will take place in conjunction with the Madrid NATO Summit.

In order to provide the President with an additional day to recuperate, President Clinton and President Yeltsin have agreed to delay the start of the summit in Helsinki by one day. The President will depart Washington on Wednesday, March 19 in the evening, arriving in Helsinki midday on Thursday, March 20. The previously announced schedule of meetings will remain essentially the same.

The United States appreciates the understanding of the governments of Finland and the Russian Federation, and particularly the government of Denmark, in agreeing to these schedule changes.
