         PRESIDENT NAMES AIDA ALVAREZ TO THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS
                   OF THE AMERICAN NATIONAL RED CROSS

The President today announced his intention to appoint Aida Alvarez as a member of the Board of Governors of the American National Red Cross.

Aida Alvarez, of New York, New York, currently serves as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration. From 1993 to 1996, she was the Director of the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, an independent agency charged with supervising the Federal Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac).

From 1988 to 1993, Ms. Alvarez was Vice-President of Public Finance at the First Boston Corporation in New York City. Ms. Alvarez received an Emmy nomination for the series "Morazan Diary", the Roberto Clemente Award for Journalistic Excellence, and a Front Page Award for her work as a journalist from 1973 to 1984. Ms. Alvarez earned her A.B. degree, cum laude, from Harvard College. Kansas

The Board of Governors of the American National Red Cross is the governing body of the Red Cross. The American National Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps the American public to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
