THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release March 11, 1997

In response to a question at today's daily briefing, the White House Legal Counsel provided the following information:

"One of the two National Security Council staffers who received the briefing in question on June 3, 1996 has a strong recollection that the staffers were asked by the FBI briefers not to disseminate the information outside the room. He made a contemporaneous note that reflects the Bureau's preference for no 'wider dissemination.' The other staffer has no specific recollection of this request but accepts the accuracy of his colleague's recollection and note. The NSC staffers elected not to brief their superiors about the information, although they recognized that NSC procedures would have permitted them to do so."
