PRESIDENT CLINTON ANNOUNCES HIS INTENTION TO NOMINATE LYLE W. SWENSON AS UNITED STATES MARSHAL FOR THE DISTRICT OF SOUTH DAKOTA

President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Lyle W. Swenson to be United States Marshal for the District of South Dakota.

Lyle W. Swenson of Mitchell, South Dakota, has served as the Sheriff of Davison County, Mitchell, South Dakota since 1964. Prior to being elected Sheriff, Mr. Swenson served as a deputy sheriff in that same office from 1961 to 1964. Before joining the Davison County Sheriff's Office, Mr. Swenson was employed by the South Dakota Department of Highways, Mitchell, South Dakota.

United States Marshals are responsible for providing court security and ensuring the protection of federal judges, as well as handling the execution of federal court orders and the seizure, management and disposition of assets obtained by government forfeiture actions. In addition, United States Marshals administer the witness security and protection program, take custody of persons detained before trial, and investigate and pursue escaped prisoners and persons who violate the conditions of their bail, probation or parole.
