STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Canadian Prime Minister Chretien to Make Official Visit

In response to an invitation from the President, Canadian Prime Minister Chretien will make his first Official Visit to Washington April 8. Mrs. Chretien will accompany the Prime Minister.

The President and the Prime Minister intend to discuss the full range of bilateral and international issues, focusing on how our exceptionally close ties can be deepened as we approach the next century.

The President paid a State Visit to Ottawa in February 1995. Prime Minister Chretien and the President have met on several other occasions outside of the United States, most recently at the November 1996 APEC Leaders Meeting.
