STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Meeting with President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea

President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea met today with National Security Adviser Anthony Lake at the White House for over an hour. President Clinton and Vice President Gore joined the meeting briefly. The leaders discussed the crisis in Central Africa, options for bringing increased stability to the region, particularly Zaire, and the situation in Sudan.

President Clinton congratulated President Isaias for the exceptional progress Eritrea has made in reforming its economy and attracting foreign investment.
