STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

United States-European Union Summit

The President will host the biannual United States-European Union Summit on December 16 at the White House. European Union participants in the Summit Meeting will be Irish Prime Minister John Bruton, President of the European Council, and Jacques Santer, President of the European Commission.

The U.S.-EU Summit will focus on cooperation over a broad range of international issues, including Bosnia, Central Europe and the Middle East. The Summit will also review progress made on key priorities under the New Transatlantic Agenda (NTA). Launched by the President and EU leaders in Madrid in December 1995, the NTA is a comprehensive and ambitious blueprint. Its objectives include enhanced U.S.-EU cooperation in promoting peace and stability across the globe, in confronting the new challenges of transnational crime, in fostering a healthier environment, and in promoting the free flow of trade and investment.
