THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release August 29, 1996

The President has notified the Congress that he will make available appropriations totaling $51.2 million in budget authority for the Department of the Interior. These emergency funds will pay for the cost of fighting fires on public lands during the remainder of this fire season. Fiscal year 1996 has been an active fire year thus far, with major early season wildfires, and within recent weeks, large wildfires in nearly every Western State of the country.

These emergency funds were appropriated in the Department of the Interior and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 1993 (Public Law 102-381).
