             PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES KEVIN L. THURM TO BE 
            DEPUTY SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

The President today announced his intent to nominate Kevin L. Thurm as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Kevin L. Thurm of New York, New York was appointed to the Clinton Administration in January 1993 as HHS Secretary Shalala's Chief of Staff. In this role, he has served as a principal advisor to Secretary Shalala on all major policy and management issues and initiatives. He has played a lead role in coordinating the activities of the Department's staff and operating divisions and in coordinating HHS's relationship with the White House and other federal agencies. As HHS's Regulatory Policy Officer, he has helped set the Department's regulatory agenda and reviewed all proposed regulations. He has also been charged with the day-to-day management of the Immediate Office of the Secretary. Previously, Mr. Thurm was employed for two years as an associate with the New York law firm of Cahill Gordon and Reindel. Additionally, from 1983 to 1984, he served as legislative assistant in the Massachusetts state government. He received a B.A. from Tufts University, a B.A./M.A. from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and a J.D. from Harvard University. He and his wife Suzanne Seiden have two sons, Eric and Jason.

The Deputy Secretary assists the Secretary in the discharge of Secretarial duties and other functions and responsibilities as the Secretary may designate. The Deputy Secretary oversees regional and field activities and, as Chief Operating Officer, assists the Secretary with the overall management of the Department.
