STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President Clinton met today with Deputy President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, accompanied by Vice President Gore. The leaders affirmed their commitment to continuing to strengthen our bilateral relations and welcomed the substantial progress made in the Binational Commission meetings this week. They also discussed a range of regional and global issues, including the situation in Burundi and negotiations on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

Finally, they welcomed the agreement in principle between the U.S. and South African legal teams on a framework for resolving the ARMSCOR case. This agreement meets the needs of both countries and represents a successful effort to resolve a difficult bilateral matter.
