STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Today in Geneva, the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on a Nuclear Test Ban, Netherland's Ambassador Jaap Ramaker, presented a revised text of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. In presenting his text, Ambassador Ramaker noted that "The entry into force formula is of fundamental importance for the fate of this treaty," and that it was now up to the Conference to negotiate such a formula. The United States agrees with this assessment and will be giving this issue close attention during the last week of negotiations. The United States welcomes the Chairman's efforts to bring the negotiations to a conclusion on June 28.
