For Immediate Release June 10, 1996

Statement by the Press Secretary

The President today announced that General Barry McCaffrey, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, will convene a law enforcement summit in El Paso, Texas on July 10 to lay the groundwork for a renewed attack on drug trafficking across the Southwest Border. The conference, which will take place at the Clarion Hotel in El Paso, will kick off stage two of a comprehensive border control strategy by cutting drugs off at their source before they wreak havoc on people's lives. The summit will bring together Washington based and regionally deployed federal officials including Attorney General Janet Reno, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, and INS Commissioner Doris Meissner with governors and officials from affected states to focus on the counterdrug threat at the border.
