PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JOHNNY H. HAYES AS A MEMBER OF THE BOARD

OF DIRECTORS FOR THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY

President Clinton has appointed Johnny H. Hayes as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Mr. Hayes will serve as a recess appointee. Mr. Hayes was nominated on March 28, 1996 and his nomination is pending before the United States Senate.

Mr. Hayes was originally appointed to the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Valley Authority on July 2, 1993, serving out the unexpired term of Marvin Runyon. Prior to joining the TVA, Mr. Hayes served as Commissioner, Tennessee State Department of Economic and Community Development where he was charged with jobs retention and growth, recruitment of new industry, and coordination with local, State and Federal governments for overall economic development for Tennessee.

This recess appointment allows Mr. Hayes to continue to use his knowledge and experience with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Full membership of the Board is important to ensure the health and safety of the customers served by the power system. Members of the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors oversee the electric power program and determine how electricity is distributed from the series of dams and nuclear power plants to customers in seven States.
