THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release May 17, 1996

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The President today sent a fiscal year 1997 budget amendment to the Congress in support of the Israeli Government's requirement for counterterrorism assistance.

The proposal would provide $50 million that would allow for the acquisition and provision of goods, services, and/or grants to Israel to support the eradication of terrorism in and around that country.

This request is part of a $100 million assistance package that President Clinton previously announced that includes $50 million in FY 1996 funds for counterterrorism assistance to Israel, which was provided in Public Law 104-134, the Omnibus Consolidated Rescissions and Appropriations Act of 1996.
