               PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ALAN PHILIP LARSON
                    AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE
                   FOR ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS AFFAIRS

The president today announced his intention to nominate Alan Philip Larson of Virginia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor to be an Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs.

Mr. Larson has held a number of senior economic positions in the State Department, including Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Finance and Development and Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Resources Policy. He also served as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Economic Corporation and Development (OECD) in Paris from 1990 to 1993 and earlier worked in the economic and commercial sections of embassies in Jamaica, Zaire and Sierra Leone.

A native of Webster City, Iowa, Mr. Larson is married to Nancy Naden Larson and currently resides in Reston, Virginia. They have three children, Nathan, Lara and Philip.
