THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. CLINTON HONOR HIS EXCELLENCY CONSTANTINE STEPHANOPOLOUS PRESIDENT OF THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC AT A WHITE HOUSE STATE DINNER
The President and Mrs. Clinton are hosting His Excellency President Constantine Stephanopolous at a White House State Dinner on Thursday May 9, 1996. The black tie dinner will begin at 7:15 PM with the arrival of President Stephanopolous at the White House North Portico. Dinner guests will begin to arrive at 7:00 PM.
Guests will be received by the President and Mrs. Clinton, and President Stephanopolous in the Cross Hall of the White House. Following the receiving line, the President and Mrs. Clinton will escort President Stephanopolous into the East Room for dinner.
The tables in the East Room will be set with the gold Eisenhower Base Plates with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Dinner plates used for service, gold flatware from the White House's Vermeil collection, and Morgantown crystal on a gold silk table cloth. The floral center pieces feature gold roses, cream roses, blue delphinium, lisianthus and lemon leaves in containers from the Vermeil collection. The arrangements are complemented by four fifteen-inch classic gold vermeil candlesticks with 24-inch gold tapers and four gold votives.
Following the dinner, guests will be entertained in the Rose Garden by the National Dance Institute (NDI). The National Dance Institute was founded in 1976 by New York City Ballet dancer, Jacques d'Amboise with the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage children and to motivate them. NDI is now one of the nation's largest arts education organizations. For the performance on Thursday evening, NDI will bring together dancers ages 9 - 15 from New York, New Jersey, The District of Columbia and North Carolina. President Clinton first saw the NDI dancers perform in December 1995 during the Kennedy Center Honors where Mr. d'Amboise was a recipient of the 1995 honors.
At the conclusion of the entertainment, the President and Mrs. Clinton will escort President Stephanopolous to the North Portico for their departure. Guests will be invited to continue the evening with dancing in the Grand Foyer.
