STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The Vice President met today in the White House with Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten. In the meeting, the Vice President reaffirmed our strong interest in Hong Kong's future stability and prosperity, and noted the extensive ties between the United States and Hong Kong. The Vice President also reiterated the fact that the U.S. government recognizes the Sino-British joint declaration of 1984 as the cornerstone for Hong Kong's future and supports its faithful implementation. The Vice President also discussed with Governor Patten the Administration's China policy, including MFN status for China and its importance to Hong Kong's future and continued prosperity.
