STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

North Korea Nuclear Fuel

After several months of close technical cooperation, nuclear experts from the United States and North Korea have begun the canning operation required for safe and secure storage of spent nuclear fuel in North Korea, pending its ultimate removal from North Korea under the terms of the October 21, 1994, U.S.-DPRK Agreed Framework. The canning operation marks a significant step in the implementation of the Agreed Framework, which requires the freeze and eventual dismantlement of North Korea's dangerous nuclear program. The Department of Energy is responsible for implementing the canning operation, which is proceeding under IAEA monitoring.
