THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release April 18, 1996

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Bomb Explosion in London

The President is deeply concerned and outraged by the explosion of a bomb in London yesterday, apparently by the IRA. There can be no excuse for violence, endangering lives and destroying property. These acts of terror must stop; those who seek to derail the search for peace must not be allowed to succeed.

Talks on the future of Northern Ireland are set to start in less than eight weeks, on June 10. That is the path to a just and lasting settlement. Only genuine dialogue and negotiation, conducted without the threat of violence, can lead to a future of hope and promise for the people of Northern Ireland. We will continue to do all we can to support those who are committed to the path of peace.
