NATIONAL FINALISTS FOR WHITE HOUSE FELLOWSHIPS ANNOUNCED
The White House today announced the 34 finalists for a 1996-97 White House Fellowship, the non-partisan program that brings exceptional men and women to Washington for a year to work directly for Cabinet secretaries and senior White House officials.
This year's National Finalists range in age from 27 to 46 and include many who have excelled in more than one profession: a former NBA player now working as an attorney; a published poet who's an Air Force officer serving in the Balkans; and an Olympian who's also an attorney.
A complete list of finalists, including hometowns, follows this page.
The 34 named today as finalists for the 1996-97 White House Fellowships will be interviewed over three days in mid-June by the President's Commission on White House Fellowships. The Commission will then recommend 11 to 19 names to the President for appointment.
White House Fellows spend their year serving as full-time assistants to senior presidential advisors and Cabinet officers. Fellows draft speeches and policy proposals, conduct briefings and coordinate federal programs. Their year is supplemented by an educational program of off-the-record meetings with top national leaders--Supreme Court justices, Members of Congress, Cabinet officers, Fortune 500 executives, prominent journalists and others.
Some 475 Americans have served as Fellows since the program was founded in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson. Alumni of the Fellowship have later served as leaders in law, education, government, medicine, the media, and the military.
Among those who have served as White House Fellows are CNN president Tom Johnson, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, retired General Colin Powell, and housing secretary Henry Cisneros.
