       WHITE HOUSE EASTER EGG HUNT AND ROLL SCHEDULED FOR 
                      MONDAY APRIL 8, 1996

The White House will hold its traditional Easter Egg Roll and Hunt on Monday, April 8, 1996. The Easter activities include the Easter Egg Roll and Hunt for children ages 3 - 6 and entertainment. There will also be entertainment on the South Lawn. The theme of this year's event is "Education & Learning."

As part of Mrs. Clinton's ongoing effort to "showcase the best of America," there is an exhibit of hand-painted easter eggs located in the East Wing of the White House. The American Egg Board coordinated having one artist from each state decorate an egg for the display. Tickets for the South Lawn are required and can be picked up at the National Park Service Pavilion on the Ellipse on Monday, April 8. Distribution of tickets will begin at 7:00 AM. The South Lawn will be open from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Some of the activities will include:

• A booth sponsored by the National PTA and American Greetings where children can write a letter to the President on, "Why I love to read..."
• The DARE program will sponsor a stage at which 5 young celebrities will educate children about the importance of staying off drugs, the celebrities will include: Raven Symone from the "Cosby Show," Bryton McClure from "Family Matters," Taran Noah Smith from "Home Improvement," Michael Fishman from "Roseanne" and Mara Wilson, from "Mrs. Doubtfire".
• Springtime Traditions and PAAS will sponsor an area that will include displays from several embassies of how Easter/Spring is celebrated in different countries.
• Midas' Safe Baby Project will have a booth where families can have their picture taken and learn about child car seat safety; the Polaroid Kid ID program will take pictures of children that will then be fed into a national children's identification database.
• Other entertainment include: Parachute Express, The Puzzle Place, and KK and the Feeling Friends, Snoopy, Statue of Liberty Barbie, Magellan T. Bear, balloon artists, and Izzy the Olympic mascot.

PRESS NOTE: This event will be open to White House press. There will be an escort to the South Grounds at approximately 9:45 to cover the President's remarks as he officially kicks-off the fesivities.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Every person going on to the South Lawn will need a ticket. Tickets will have a time printed on them indicating the time they should go to the South Lawn. To accommodate the festivities, E Street between 15th and 17th Streets will be closed. As parking is severely limited, people are encouraged to use public transportation. In case of inclement weather, all events are cancelled and not rescheduled. HARD BOILED FACTS:

• There will be 27,000 wooden eggs used at this year's event. The pastel eggs feature a silhouette of the White House and the signatures of the President and the First Lady.
• There will be 7,000 hard boiled eggs used for the Egg Roll. The eggs are dyed by the White House chef.
• Adults must be accompanied by a child age 3 to 6 years to enter the White House Lawn. All persons are required to have a ticket.
• The original site of the Easter Egg Roll was on the grounds of the United States Capitol. The event began during James Madison's presidency at the suggestion of Mrs. Madison who had learned that Egyptian children rolled colored eggs on the site of the Pyramids.
• In 1878 President Hayes and his wife Lucy officially moved the Easter activities to the White House grounds. The Easter Egg Roll has taken place on the White House Lawn since 1878 except during World War I and World War II. During the War years, the Easter Egg Roll was held at the National Zoo, and other Washington locations.
• In the event of rain the Easter Monday activities on the South Lawn will be cancelled and not rescheduled. However the White House will be open for families to tour.
