THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release April 4, 1996
STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE
                    ON COMMERCE SECRETARY RON BROWN

Ron Brown was a dear friend and a national treasure. And in these days of profound pain and disbelief, Tipper and I send our prayers to his family, loved ones and colleagues.

Throughout his life, Ron Brown toppled barriers with quiet elegance and relentless determination. He was a trailblazer who left a legacy of firsts -- the first African-American to head a major political party, the first African-American to become a partner in his Washington law firm, the first African-American to lead the Commerce Department. He also left a legacy of "bests." He was, for example, the best Secretary of Commerce in the history of the United States.

In every endeavor -- whether in private business or in public service -- he tackled each challenge with an unmatchable mix of hard-headed savvy and warm-hearted idealism.

America has been enriched by his dedicated public service -- just as Tipper and I and all who were privileged to know him have been enriched by his friendship. We will miss him dearly.
