THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release April 2, 1996

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The United States welcomes the successful conclusion of peaceful Presidential elections in Benin. This second Presidential election since Benin's transition to democracy in 1990 demonstrates the resolve of its people to adhere to the democratic process. We commend both President-elect Kerekou and President Nicephore Soglo for their respect for the rule of law, the will of the people and the authority of Benin's Constitutional Court.

President Soglo led his country through a remarkable democratic renewal and economic recovery. His enduring legacy is a peaceful, productive and democratic Benin. We are confident he will continue to serve the needs of his country and its citizens.

The United States urges both President-elect Kerekou and President Soglo to work together to ensure a smooth transfer of power. We look forward to continued close bilateral cooperation with the Government of Benin as it continues on the path of democracy and economic reform.
