THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release March 29, 1996

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Korea Visit

President Clinton will pay a brief visit on April 16 to the Republic of Korea at the start of his trip to Japan and Russia. Changes in his schedule enable the President to accept the long-standing invitation of President Kim Young Sam of the Republic of Korea to make a brief stopover at Cheju Island while he is in the region.

President Clinton is pleased to have the opportunity to discuss with President Kim security issues relating to the Korean peninsula and northeast Asia. These are not only important in their own right, but are highly relevant to important discussions the President will have with Prime Minister Hashimoto of Japan. Close cooperation among the United States, Japan and the Republic of Korea is a crucial component of U.S. security interests in Asia.
