STATEMENT BY THE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR LORRAINE VOLES

Vice President Al Gore announced today he had received assurances from Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin that U.S. poultry exports to Russia will continue without interruption. The Prime Minister's message was relayed to the Vice President through Russian Minister of Economics Yevgeny Yasin in a meeting today at the White House. The Prime Minister also confirmed that the reported March 16 cessation of Russian poultry imports from the U.S. will not take place.

The Vice President accepted Prime Minister Chernomyrdin's invitation to send senior U.S. officials to Moscow for high-level discussions of outstanding issues related to U.S. poultry exports. The Vice President welcomed these developments and said the Administration will continue to work with Russian officials to resolve remaining issues related to poultry.
