PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES LAWRENCE NEAL BENEDICT AS AMBASSADOR TO

THE REPUBLIC OF CAPE VERDE

President Clinton announced today his intent to nominate Lawrence Neal Benedict, of California, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counselor, as Ambassador to the Republic of Cape Verde.

Mr. Benedict recently departed Sudan where he served as Deputy Chief of Mission. Prior to Khartoum, he served in Pakistan, Turkey, Brazil and Bangladesh in addition to several assignments at the Department of State in Washington.

Mr. Benedict was born in Independence, Missouri on December 17, 1942. He is married to Gloria K. (Bruning) Benedict, who is also a Foreign Service Officer. He served in the California Air National Guard from 1962 to 1968 and graduated from California State University at Long Beach in 1974. Mr. Benedict speaks Portuguese and Turkish.
