PRESIDENT CLINTON DECLARES MAJOR DISASTER IN SOUTH DAKOTA

President Clinton today declared a major disaster in the state of South Dakota and ordered federal aid to supplement local recovery efforts in the area struck by a severe winter storm October 22-24, 1995.

The President's action makes federal funding available to local governments in a 26 county area. The counties include: Aurora, Beadle, Bon Homme, Brookings, Brule, Buffalo, Charles Mix, Clark, Codington, Davison, Deuel, Douglas, Grant, Gregory, Hamlin, Hanson, Hutchinson, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lake, McCook, Miner, Roberts, Sanborn, Spink, and Tripp.

Federal funding is available to eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis for regular repair or replacement of public facilities damaged by the severe winter storm.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is continuing to conduct damage surveys in other areas of South Dakota and additional counties may be added after the assessments are complete.
