STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Visit of Indonesian President Soeharto

President Clinton will meet in the White House with President Soeharto of Indonesia on October 27. President Soeharto is making a private visit to Washington in order to deliver a keynote address on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of CARE, following his participation in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

Following-up on progress made during President Clinton's visit to Indonesia last year, the two Presidents will address the agenda and means for ensuring a successful meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Osaka, Japan in November, as well as regional security and bilateral issues. President Clinton hosted the first APEC leaders meeting at Blake Island, Washington in 1993, and President Soeharto presided over the second meeting in Bogor, Indonesia last year.
