PRESIDENT CLINTON DECLARES MAJOR DISASTER IN ALASKA

The President today declared a major disaster in Alaska and ordered federal funds to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms and flooding on September 18 and continuing.

The President's action makes federal funding available to local governments in the Municipality of Anchorage, Kenai Peninsula Borough and Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Federal funding is available to eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis for the repair or replacement of public facilities damaged by the severe weather. Federal funding is also available on a cost sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is continuing to conduct damage surveys in other areas and additional counties may be added after the assessments are complete.
