           PRESIDENT NAMES BARRY M. GOLDWATER AND PETER S. KNIGHT 
                      TO THE COMSAT BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The President today announced his intention to re-nominate both Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona and Peter S. Knight of Washington to the Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT) Board of Directors.

Barry M. Goldwater served in the U.S. Senate from 1953 to 1965, and returned in 1969 to serve until his retirement in January 1987. Currently, Senator Goldwater serves as director of various business organizations, and is a professor of the Goldwater Chair of American Institutions at Arizona State University.

Peter Knight is an attorney with the law firm of Wunder, Diefenderfer, Cannon and Thelen where he specializes in communications and environmental matters. He also serves as a director of two other publicly traded corporations and numerous public policy foundations. He is the former Administrative Assistant to then-Senator Al Gore, Jr., a position he held for thirteen years.

COMSAT is a private, shareholder owned, publicly traded corporation which was established in 1962. The function of the Board of Directors is to oversee the corporation. The purpose of COMSAT is to facilitate understanding and world peace through an improved global communications network.
