          PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES LAVEEDA MORGAN BATTLE TO THE 
          BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE LEGAL SERVICES CORPORATION

President Clinton announced today his intent to nominate Laveeda Morgan Battle as a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation.

LaVeeda Morgan Battle of Alabama is an attorney in private practice specializing in employment discrimination and public utility regulation law. Ms. Battle previously served as an Administrative Judge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and as General Counsel to the Governor of Alabama's Public Staff for Utility Consumer Protection, a position she was appointed to by former Governor Wallace. She is the past President of the Alabama Lawyers Association and an active leader of the Alabama Bar. Ms. Battle's commitment to legal services for the poor dates back to the beginning of her legal career, where she worked for two years as the Managing Attorney of the Birmingham Area Legal Services.

The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) was established by the Legal Services Corporation Act of 1974. The Board of Directors of the LSC supervises and directs the activities of the Corporation which provides financial support for indigent clients in non-criminal cases through grants and contracts with individuals, partnerships, firms, corporations, non-profit organizations, and state and local governments.
